New Changes for the Branding of Imported Vehicles and Motorcycles New policies for the registration of certain imported vehicles and motorcycles was announced by the Ontario Ministry of Transportation that may make them not eligible for licensing or plates for road use. Impacted vehicles are as follows: Vehicles that are imported into Ontario branded as SALVAGE being identified as “fire or flood” damaged are now branded as IRREPARABLE or “parts only” when registered in Ontario. Previously these vehicles were eligible for repair and inspection, with successful inspections being REBUILT and plated. It is expected, though not confirmed, that if a vehicle was branded as SALVAGE by fire or flood, repaired in the USA, then sold to a consumer that eventually brings it to Ontario via a legitimate import or move will be IRREPARABLE or “parts only”. Previously there was no brand of salvage for motorcycles registered in Ontario. Now all imported motorcycles branded as SALVAGE or REBUILT or equivalent brand must be registered as IRREPARABLE or “parts only” in Ontario after July 16, 2007. Total-loss vehicles that have or appear to have their air bag or wheel sensors immersed in liquid may be branded as IRREPARABLE flood vehicles, based on a recent appeal to the Ministry. “If shops are fixing these vehicles now, they should cease repair work until the customer is advised that these vehicles, even if repaired, may now not be allowed license plates in Ontario,” says Tony Nigro, President of www.ciia.com (Collision Industry Information and Assistance).
